These Spiced Apple Chips make a perfect crunchy snack! Made from fresh apples and flavoured with cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of ginger, they’re naturally sweet, healthy, and satisfying. Dehydrated to a crispy finish, these homemade chips are a great guilt-free treat for when you're craving something crisp and flavourful.
Ingredients:
• 4 - 6 large apples (preferably firm varieties like Fuji, Gala).
• 1-2 tbsp lemon juice (to prevent browning)
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
• 1/4 tsp ground ginger (optional for extra warmth)
• 1-2 tbsp maple syrup or honey (optional for sweetness)
• Pinch of salt (optional, but enhances flavour)
Instructions:
•Prepare the Apples: Wash and peel the apples (optional, depending on your preference). If you prefer to keep the skins on, just make sure they’re thoroughly cleaned.
• Slice the apples thinly using a sharp knife or mandolin slicer for uniform slices.
• Toss the Apple Slices in Lemon Juice: Place the apple slices in a large bowl and sprinkle with the lemon juice. Toss to coat the slices evenly, which will help prevent browning and preserve the bright colour.
• Season the Apples: In a small bowl, mix the cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger (if using), and a pinch of salt. Optionally, add maple syrup or honey for a bit of sweetness. Sprinkle the spice mixture evenly over the apple slices and toss gently to coat all the slices.
• Arrange the Apples on the Dehydrator Trays: Lay the apple slices flat on the dehydrator trays, making sure they don’t overlap. Use mesh tray liner to prevent sticking.
• Dehydrate: Set the dehydrator to 60°C and dehydrate for about 6-8 hours, or until the apple slices are completely dry. Check them periodically, as dehydration time may vary depending on the thickness of your slices and the type of apple.
• The apples should be completely dry and snap when bent, with no moisture remaining inside.
• Cool and Store: Once done, remove the apple chips from the dehydrator and let them cool completely on the trays.
• Store the cooled apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks. If you want to extend shelf life, store them in a sealed jar or vacuum-sealed bag.
Tips:
Uniform Slices: For best results, try to slice the apples uniformly to ensure even drying.
Sweetness Adjustments: Adjust the amount of honey or maple syrup depending on your sweetness preference.
Flavour Variations: You can add a dash of ground cloves or cardamom for an even spicier kick or try a pinch of cayenne pepper for a touch of heat.
For Even Crisper Apples: To make the apples even more crisp, place them onto an oven tray and toast gently forb5 minutes at 180ºC. Be careful not to burn them!
These spiced apple chips are a great snack to enjoy during Autumn or anytime you’re craving something crunchy and naturally sweet.
